The world of boots hasn’t just been underwhelming: it’s vast and confusing, too. But when you’re introduced to a pair of real good boots — the kind that you can take to a cobbler and keep wearing for decades — we believe that can be a game-changer.
Our goal was to make a boot in the traditional way—not as they were made 50 years ago, but as they were made 100 years ago.
Leather
Our Chelsea Boots are crafted with USA Horween Leather, sourced directly from the tannery in Chicago. Chromexcel leather was developed a century ago and it was made specifically for boots. It’s a high-quality leather, hot-stuffed with oils and waxes, making it highly weather-resistant. You can wear these boots in rain or snow, and they’ll hold up beautifully. Chromexcel leather is also exceptionally soft, allowing for a quick and comfortable break-in period.
Construction
The construction of our boots follows the time-tested method of Goodyear welting, which dates back over 100 years. With Goodyear welting, the space inside the sole is filled with hot cork after stitching, which allows it to mold to your foot, creating a custom, comfortable fit. Goodyear-welted boots are rare in today’s market because the method is costly and time-consuming, but it's the best for construction and we wanted to craft the best pair of boots.
Our boots also feature a Dainite sole, a heritage sole known for its exceptional quality. It offers the performance of a rugged work boot without an overly rugged look.
Portugal
We’re producing our boots in Portugal, where footwear craftsmanship has been honed over centuries. Many of the bootmakers are fourth and fifth generation artisans, working with machines that are over 100 years old. Ultimately, if we were going to make a boot like this, the only concern is that we're doing it at a place that can do the best job. Portugal is top in the world in boot and shoe construction.
Style
We decided on the Chelsea boot for its unique style. Leather wrapping from heel to toe, and heavy stitching surrounding an elastic band for effortless wear. We opted for an almond-shaped toe box, blending the rounded look of American work boots with the pointed shape of European styles. This design gives the boot a slightly more formal look without being overly trendy.
Sizing
True-to-size: We recommend selecting your true shoe size, as measured on a Brannock Device. You can find one of these in our three retail stores, or nearly any store that sells men’s footwear. If you have a standard size in dress shoes, that will likely align. Tennis shoe sizes are not a reliable sizing mechanism and can vary significantly.
If you have a narrower foot, consider going down one-half to one full size.
Your boots will have a snug fit initially- the leather will stretch slightly with wear, molding to your feet in time.
