Stitch: Behind The Name
Right above our retail store, Cassius Clay used to train as a teenager at Headline Boxing Gym. But before the gold medal, before Muhammad Ali was a household name—there was one man he couldn’t beat. That man was Rudell Stitch: the namesake of our bar, former No. 2-ranked Welterweight in the world, and a true hero in Louisville history.
Stitch was much more than an elite boxer. In 1958, he received the Carnegie Hero Medal for saving a man from drowning in the Ohio River. On June 5th, 1960, Rudell Stitch passed away attempting to save a friend from the river once again, the day before signing for a rematch with the No. 1-ranked Welterweight, Luis Rodriguez. He received another Hero Medal for his sacrifice, only the sixth person to receive the award twice.
His actions and character are why you’ll find a ‘Hometown Hero’ banner of Rudell on 4th Street. We’ve gotten to know the Stitch family and have promised to share his story with anyone who’ll listen.
